Roman Treasures –
buried and rediscovered
Special exhibition at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich
21 November 2008 – 22 March 2009
In this special exhibition the Swiss National Museum in Zurich presents the famous late Roman hoard from Lunnern (Canton Zurich), which was discovered in 1741 and consists of precious gold jewellery and coins. Its owner buried these treasures towards the end of the 3rd century AD for safe keeping in times of danger. New insight into the social and historical context of the find has been gained through significant research studies, the results of which will be published in the upcoming issue of COLLECTIO ARCHAEOLOGICA. The social and historical context of the find will be one of the main focuses of the exhibition and will be highlighted by other spectacular late Roman jewellery from Switzerland and abroad. In addition numerous hitherto unpublished documents concerning the excavations in Lunnern will provide an insight into the Age of Enlightenment and the beginnings of systematic archaeological research in Switzerland and Zurich in particular.
