The library of the Swiss National Museum is both a tool for the use of museum staff and a publicly accessible library specialising in archaeology, art and cultural history, Swiss history, museum studies, restoration and conservation.

Current holdings comprise some 60,000 individual volumes as well as approximately 800 periodical titles, and the library is continuously adding such new media as CDs and videos. A further focus of the collection is exhibition and auction catalogues.

Acquisitions made since 1994 can be searched via internet on the NEBIS catalogue network (www.nebis.ch), while items acquired earlier can be found in the card catalogue of the Zurich Central Library, or read online in scanned form (http://zbzazk.eurospider.com/ digital_library, see under L). The journals are listed only partially on the NEBIS online catalogue, while complete periodicals holdings can be viewed in the Central Library’s card catalogue at its main location.

Interlending possible: please contact your local library (see under Zü122)

Masterpieces of facsimile reproduction - Browse through Mediaeval illuminated manuscripts!

Faksimile Verlag of Lucerne has donated one copy of each of its entire range of facsimile productions to the Swiss National Museum. This unique collection, today comprising 46 opulently illustrated manuscripts from the 8th to the 16th centuries, is continuously expanded as new editions appear.

These one-of-a-kind treasures are at once masterpieces of book illustration and consummate examples of the art of facsimile reproduction.

Peruse the Duke of Berry’s Book of Hours or admire the exquisite Lorsch Gospels. Please make arrangements for your visit in advance.
