Life in the Old Confederation
How Did People Imagine Their Past—the Workshop of History
The permanent exhibition begins on the top floor, in what might fairly be called the workshop of history. Each period fashions its own image of the past. The raw materials of history, whether texts or paintings, songs or films, are interpreted and given meaning by each generation anew. The workshop of history uses the figure of William Tell along with other national symbols to revive various historiographies and conceptions of the past interactively.
